There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?
I teach high school, so I definitely know people who fall into that category. In fact, I'd say that statistic is LOW; if you isolated Americans ages 12-18, I'd think at least half haven't read a book in the last year, and some may not have read a book in the last 2-3 years.
Of course, ALL of MY students have to read a book. (And they don't like it ONE BIT.)

I think there was only the one time I didn't want to read a book assigned by one of my high school teachers, and that was when I was in 9th grade and we had to read one folklore book, all written in old-fashioned language! Ugh!
I miss doing book reports LOL
The world needs more teachers like you :)
Mine's posted here.
I make my students read as well. We'll beat that statistic yet.
I didn't enjoy the books assigned to us in school only because I had no interest in analyzing them to the last detail and writing long essays about them. Now that I'm no longer in school, I've reread most of the books and like them! My answer: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2007/08/booking-through-thursday-statistics.html
I'm hoping youngsters nowadays will read more books though...some of them I knew are addicted to television and computer games which I find it not very healthy if this goes on.
Good for you for making your students read!!! We definitely need teachers like you! :)
Isn't it sad! I remember getting into trouble for reading on my own (I had finished the assignments each day)
How times change!
Wow... that is a depressing statistic. I've read 30 books already this year, and the year's not even over yet! But I do know several people who don't read unless they have to. I can't even imagine it.
