One of the freshmen vocab words for this week is BLISS.
I always make a powerpoint when we start a new unit, because then I don't have to make a thousand copies, or repeat myself, or write on the board. Plus there are pictures.
For BLISS (extreme happiness), I used this picture:
"That is the look on my face when you all walk in the door," I told my students. And when it came time for them to write their (original) sentences for each vocab word, more than one wrote something along these lines:
Ms. Flower feels blissful when she sees our class.
So that makes two words they know now.

Sarcasm and exaggerated enthusiasm: all it really takes to make the vocabulary stick.
I stand by that formula myself. In Spanish my memory devices also tend to be dirty.
