I introduced new vocabulary words to my freshmen today. I go back and forth between two sets of words. One has fairly easy, recognizable words; the other is SAT words that are pretty hard. Today's were SAT words.
One of our words was truculent (eager to fight, easily angered). I was explaining the word, reading sample sentences, when one of my kids spoke up:
"Ms. Flower, you know we're never going to use these words outside of this class."
"Kid," I replied calmly, "I get truculent when you say things like that."
